Skunk Found In Local Woman’s Backyard Was Rabid

GATESVILLE (March 20, 2013)—A skunk that a Gatesville woman found her dog “messing with” in the backyard of her home Saturday in the 400 block of Valley View Drive tested positive for rabies, Gatesville police Chief Nathan Gholke said Wednesday.

Animal control officers killed the skunk and sent it to the Texas Department of Health Services, which notified police Wednesday that the animal was rabid.

It was the fourth rabid skunk found in the city this month.

A skunk that a local man found last week in the backyard of his home in the 1000 block of Highland Drive in Gatesville was also rabid and the man’s dog was quarantined because it may have come into contact with the animal.

Two other skunks sent for testing earlier this month also tested positive for rabies.

One was killed on March 1 after a resident reported the skunk was fighting with dogs in a yard in the 100 block of Pate Drive.

On March 2 Animal Control officers killed a skunk found in a yard in the 100 block of Ash Drive.

Officials advise residents who find such high risk animals to contact Animal Control Officers immediately.
