Skunk Local Man Found In His Backyard Was Rabid; Dog Quarantined

GATESVILLE (March 18, 2013)—A skunk that a local man found last week in the backyard of his home in the 1000 block of Highland Drive in Gatesville was rabid and the man’s dog was quarantined because it may have come into contact with the animal, Gatesville Police Chief Nathan Gohlke said Monday.

Animal Control officers shot the skunk and sent it to the Texas Department of Health Services in Austin for testing.

They were notified over the weekend that the skunk was rabid, Gholke said.

Two other skunks sent for testing earlier this month also tested positive for rabies.

One was killed on March 1 after a resident reported the skunk was fighting with dogs in a yard in the 100 block of Pate Drive.

On March 2 Animal Control officers killed a skunk found in a yard in the 100 block of Ash Drive.

Officials advise residents who find such high risk animals to contact Animal Control Officers immediately.
