AMARILLO (July 26, 2013)—The pilot who was killed when a twin engine plane crashed Thursday in a yard by a mobile home in Amarillo has been identified as a Texas businessman.
Ben Harned IV, 53, of Tyler was alone on the Piper PA-30, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said.
Harned reported problems with the plane’s left engine shortly after taking off Thursday and was attempting to return to Tradewind Airport when the plane crashed near a highway interchange inside the Amarillo city limits, officials said.
The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will investigate.
The National Weather Service says Amarillo had thunderstorms Thursday morning with wind gusts topping 20 miles per hour.
