Soldier Arrested After 2 Texas Highway Workers Struck, Killed

EL PASO (May 12, 2014) An 18-year-old First Armored Division soldier from Fort Bliss was arrested after a vehicle struck and killed two highway workers along Interstate 10 in an accident that authorities say was alcohol-related.

One bridge worker died at the scene early Sunday and the other later died at a hospital.

The victims were identified Monday as James Green, 39, and Jimmy Joe Broadstreet, 54.

Police say the driver ignored a traffic barricade.

Jan Michael Nieves was in the El Paso County Jail Monday charged with two counts of intoxicated manslaughter.

His bonds total $200,000.
