KILLEEN (April 21, 2014) A 29-year-old man surrendered to police Monday morning after he held officers at bay at a Killeen apartment complex for more than an hour while threatening to kill himself.

Officers were sent at around 10:50 a.m. Monday to the Summerlyn Apartments, in the 4100 block of East Rancier Avenue after a caller reported that a man was threatening to commit suicide.

The first officers to arrive found the man barricaded inside one of the apartments and called for a SWAT team.

The officers believed the man had a weapon.

Some residents were evacuated from units near the apartment as a precaution police said.

Negotiators were able to convince the man to surrender just after noon and the standoff ended without injury, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple for mental evaluation, police said.

Officers recovered a machete from inside the apartment, police said.
