HEARNE (May 21, 2014) What started Tuesday evening as a chase involving a woman who was driving north in the southbound lanes of Highway 6 ended in a standoff in Hearne after the woman stopped and then refused to get out of her SUV.
The woman was involved in a crash that caused minor damage at around 8:30 p.m. in Bryan, where a man says his vehicle ended up in a ditch because of the wrong-way driver.
Authorities tried to use spike strips to stop the SUV, KBTX-TV in Bryan reported, but were unsuccessful.
The woman eventually stopped on the highway in Hearne, but remained in the SUV.
Officers closed down all lanes of Highway 6 and routed traffic around the town during the more than hour-long standoff, KBTX reported.
She eventually surrendered.
The highway was reopened early Wednesday morning.
The 58-year-old Bryan woman is diabetic and apparently experienced a medical problem, the Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.
She likely won’t face charges, the DPS said.
