WACO (May 9, 2013)—Police discovered a chop shop early Thursday morning in a Waco neighborhood from which they recovered stolen vehicles and a large number of auto parts thanks to a local resident who tried to chase down the thieves who stole his car.
The discovery came after officers responded just after midnight to the report of the theft of a car from a North Waco neighborhood.
The owner witnessed the theft and gave chase, but encountered a third vehicle, whose driver was attempting to keep him from pursuing the stolen vehicle.
The thieves abandoned the stolen car a short time later, but officers were able to track the vehicle whose driver intervened in the chase to a home in the 3900 block of North 20th Street.
They determined the black Ford Mustang was stolen and had false license plates.
In the backyard of the home, they found three more stolen vehicles along with a large assortment of auto parts including doors, hoods, bumpers, engines, transmissions as well as various heavy tools.
Rodolfo Cruz, 25, was arrested and charged with two counts of theft over $1,500.
He was in the McLennan County Jail Thursday afternoon in lieu of bonds totaling $10,000.
Additional arrests are possible, police said Thursday.
