Supreme Court Blocks Execution Of Convicted Killer Of Texas Police Officer

HUNTSVILLE (October 18, 2012)--The U.S. Supreme Court Thursday halted the execution of Anthony Haynes, 33, who was scheduled to receive a lethal injection just after 6 p.m. for the murder of an off-duty Houston police sergeant 14 years ago.

Haynes was convicted of the shooting death of Sgt. Kent Kincaid.

Kincaid and his wife were riding in their SUV when an object thrown from a pickup truck cracked the windshield.

When he got out to talk to the people in the truck he said he was a police officer and one of the occupants, identified as Haynes, shot him in the head.

The high court ruling came about three hours before Haynes would have been taken to the death chamber.

His attorneys argued he had deficient legal help at his trial and earlier in his appeals.
