Suspected Truck Thief Killed By Texas Trooper, Police Officer

CENTER (May 6, 2014) Officers shot and killed an East Texas man suspected of stealing a pickup truck after the fleeing vehicle hit a Department of Public Safety trooper.

The man was identified as Jonathan Swindle, 38, of Shelbyville.

A DPS trooper and a Center police officer killed Swindle after a pursuit Sunday night, during which Trooper Zachary Mills of Center was struck.

He was in good condition Tuesday at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger says Mills was out of his patrol car when he was struck while in a ditch as Swindle drove off a road and around a spike-strip near Center, about 160 miles northeast of Houston.

Another trooper and a Center officer then shot Swindle.

The DPS did not identify either officer.
