WACO (June 27, 2014) The Waco Fire Department’s hazardous materials team responded to the Waco VA Medical Center late Friday afternoon after a report of a suspicious package, but the contents proved to be harmless.

Tests performed by the hazmat team determined the package contained sugar.

Firefighters were sent to the medical center at around 3:15 p.m. Friday in response to a report of the package in building 4 on the VA campus, which houses the pharmacy.

The hazardous materials team was requested and arrived about 45 minutes later.

Two people who handled the package, which was mailed to the pharmacy, were temporarily quarantined until the team determined the package contained crystallized confectioners sugar.

The building was temporarily evacuated, as well.

The package and its contents were turned over to VA police.
