SALADO (February 14, 2014) First-year Salado Junior High and High School teacher Marcos Garcia has resigned and Salado police are investigating after the parents of a 16-year-old female student came forward with allegations of an inappropriate relationship, Superintendent Dr. Michael Novotny confirmed Friday.

Novotny said he contacted police after he learned of the allegations Thursday.

“When we did the investigation (Thursday), we found out that there have been text messages going on for about a week and a half now between the two of them and the physical contact started just earlier this week,” Novotny said.

After interviewing the girl and other witnesses, he said he met with Garcia and told him he was going to recommend that the school board fire him.

Garcia, who taught math and also coached football and power lifting, opted to resign to avoid that possibility, Novotny said.

“I think it's been a very unfortunate incident, but I think the parents and community members have been supportive of how quickly we acted to deal with it,” Novotny said.

The district is cooperating with police and has reported the incident to the State Board for Educators Certification and to Child Protective Services, he said.

The results of the police investigation will be delivered to the Bell County District Attorney's Office, he said.

In June 2013 former Salado Intermediate School teacher Lisa Marie Wagnon was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a decade on deferred adjudication probation after pleading guilty to sexual assault in an incident involving a 15-year-old student.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Wagnon was required to register as a sex offender and surrender her teaching certificate.

The deferred adjudication means that if Wagnon successfully completes the term of probation, a conviction won’t appear on her record.

Wagnon was indicted in January 2013 for sexual assault and improper relationship between educator and student.

She turned herself in on Oct. 25, 2012, to Travis County sheriff's deputies in Austin after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

The warrant stemmed from an investigation that started on Oct. 22, 2012 after the student told school administrators that he was having a sexual relationship with a teacher.
