GRAND PRAIRIE (December 26, 2013) A teenage boy died and two Grand Prairie police officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire on Christmas Day that began with a traffic stop.
The 16-year-old shot Wednesday afternoon in the exchange of gunfire with Grand Prairie police was identified Thursday as Peyton Cole Barbour.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Barbour's Facebook page indicates he was a student at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School.
The officers received superficial wounds in the shootout Wednesday.
They were treated at a hospital and later released.
Barbour died shortly after he was taken into surgery.
Police say he was from Mansfield, about 30 miles southwest of Dallas.
They say the sequence of events that led to the shooting began early Wednesday morning when the teenager fled from police during an attempted traffic stop.
He eventually abandoned his car and ran.
He then exchanged gunfire with a pursuing officer, and fled into some nearby woods.
Police found him about nine hours later, which led to the gunfire that left the teenager mortally wounded.
