SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (August 3, 2014) Dawson Johnson, 75, of Redwater, who was a longtime computer technology instructor at Texarkana College, has died in a fall while climbing Mount Whitney in California, authorities said.
Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the continental U.S.
Crews recovered Johnson’s body Thursday from the north slope of the mountain at an elevation of about, 13,300 feet, the National Park Service said.
Johnson was hiking Tuesday with his wife in Sequoia National Park when he decided to take a solo hike to Mount Whitney, where other hikers reported seeing him on a trail that approaches the summit.
After Johnson failed to return to his campsite by the next morning, his wife contacted park rangers to report him missing.
