DRIPPING SPRINGS (June 27, 2014) Dane Andrew Thyssen, 39, and Jenifer Elise Thyssen, 40, were in the Hays County Jail Friday charged with kidnapping after police say they kept their adopted son locked in a garage apartment for at least four years, giving him a box of food periodically and allowing him to leave once a week.
An arrest warrant affidavit says the apartment behind the couple’s home in Dripping Springs was locked from the outside.
The two told police their son, Koystya Thyssen, 22, was locked inside to protect other children, the affidavit said.
Police began investigating after Koystya Thyssen was arrested in connection with a break-in at a neighbor’s home.
Authorities say he used a screwdriver he took from his father to escape from the locked apartment.
He was jailed Friday on a burglary charge.
