BIG LAKE (August 2, 2012)--A nearly 17-hour-long standoff between law enforcement officers and a man suspected of shooting a West Texas deputy to death ended in the suspected gunman’s arrest late Thursday morning in Big Lake.
A tactical team surrounded the house and at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Marcus Madison, 42, emerged with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, Department of Public Safety Trooper Phillip "Sparky" Dean said.
Earlier reports indicated incorrectly that officers entered the house and found Madison hiding in a closet.
Reagan County Sheriff Jeff Garner says Madison was taken to a hospital for treatment of the facial wound.
Garner said Madison had held officers at bay since around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday after Deputy Josh Mitchell, 26, was killed.
Garner says multiple firearms were found inside the home.
The sheriff told the San Angelo Standard-Times that Mitchell went to the house to talk with Madison about a complaint, but he declined to elaborate.
Big Lake is a town of about 2,900 about 160 miles southwest of Abilene.
