Texas Deputy Shot While Serving Warrant

SAN ANTONIO (February 6, 2013)—Bexar County sheriff’s Deputy Jose Esquivel was hospitalized Wednesday after he was shot twice as he and four other deputies tried to serve felony warrants at a house just outside northwestern San Antonio at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said Esquivel and the other deputies were trying to serve seven felony arrest warrants on Juan Daniel Gonzales, Jr., 38., charging felony theft, retaliation and failure to register as a sex offender.

As deputies searched the house, Gonzales surprised one of them in the laundry room and shots were fired, Pamerleau said.

Information about the condition of the 28-year veteran of the sheriff’s office wasn’t immediately available, but he was alert as he was taken to the hospital.

Gonzales is in custody.
