HUNTSVILLE (December 3, 2013) Texas death row inmate Jerry Martin, 43, was executed just after 6 p.m. Tuesday in Huntsville for the death of a corrections officer during a short-lived escape from prison six years ago.

Martin requested that no additional appeals be filed on his behalf, clearing the way for the execution Tuesday evening.

Martin was serving 50 years for attempted capital murder when he and another inmate bolted from a work detail outside a Huntsville-area prison in September 2007.

Martin took an officer’s weapon and then the two inmates ran to a city parking lot and stole a City Of Huntsville truck.

Martin then drove the truck into a prison officer who was on horseback.

Susan Canfield, 59, fell and suffered fatal head injuries.

Canfield's horse was euthanized after a bullet wound was discovered.

Both Martin and his accomplice, John Falk, were captured within hours after driving off in the stolen pickup.

Martin's execution was the 16th and last scheduled for this year in Texas.

Falk is awaiting retrial after a judge declared a mistrial in his first capital murder trial earlier this year.
