Texas Judge Commits Suicide In His Chambers

CORPUS CHRISTI (July 16, 2013)—State District Judge Tom Greenwell, who was found dead in his chambers in Corpus Christi, took his own life, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The Nueces County sheriff's Office said Tuesday it's not clear why Greenwell shot himself, but said a handwritten will was found nearby.

Greenwell was supposed to be on vacation when a cleaning crew found his body Monday after the courthouse had closed for the day.

Authorities say he went to the courthouse to do some work and made a few calls prior to his death.

Greenwell was elected to the bench in 2001, was re-elected in 2006 and ran unopposed in 2010.
