Texas Kindergartner Gets Lifesaving Award

ODESSA (May 15, 2014) Derek Hefner, a 6-year-old kindergarten student, received the Odessa Fire Department's Life Saving Award for actions that helped save the life of a flower delivery man on Valentine's Day.

Richard Tomlin collapsed outside in front of the school after making a delivery.

Derek, who was walking inside a school hallway, saw him fall and alerted teachers who called for paramedics.

On Wednesday Derek accepted a plaque, accolades from department officials, students and teachers at Odessa's Compass Academy where he goes to school and gratitude from the man whose life he saved.

A grateful and teary-eyed Tomlin was present Wednesday for his first meeting with Derek since the day he collapsed.

“(There” really are angels among us,” he said.
