BROWNSVILLE (December 4, 2012)—Port Isabel lawyer Ray Marchan will be sentenced Thursday in Brownsville after a federal judge overturned his conviction on one public corruption count, but let his conviction on six other charges for bribing a Texas judge stand.
U. S. District Judge Andrew Hanen overturned a jury's verdict that found Marchan guilty of mail fraud in the Judge Abel Limas corruption case.
Libel, who failed in his 2008 re-election bid, awaits sentencing on federal racketeering charges.
Hanen upheld Marchan's June conviction on six counts, including racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, three counts of aiding and abetting extortion, plus a second count of mail fraud.
Marchan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison on each count.
He's free on bond pending sentencing.
