Texas Man Accused Of Blinding 2-Year-Old Stepdaughter

HOUSTON (January 16, 2014) Angel Martinez, 26, was in the Harris County Jail Thursday charged with injury to a child in an incident that left his 2-year-old stepdaughter blind.

He was ordered held on $75,000 bond.

He was arrested Monday after an investigation that started when the toddler’s mother took the girl to a hospital on Dec. 12.

A criminal complaint says Martinez told investigators he threw the girl into the air, but failed to catch her and her head hit a chair.

Doctors said the injuries didn’t appear to be accidental.

The girl’s mother faces a charge of injury to a child by omission.

On Thursday a spokesman for the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston said under federal rules he was not allowed to release any information about the girl’s condition.
