HOUSTON (October 25, 2013) An officer shot and killed a man in Houston after the man stabbed his mother during an argument in an apartment, police said Friday.
The officer responded to a report of a disturbance at the apartment Thursday.
When police knocked on the door, they encountered Matthew Swiney, 22, who answered the door armed with a hammer, authorities said.
Swiney then shut the door and barricaded himself in the apartment, police said.
The officers heard a woman, later identified as Swiney's 47-year-old mother, screaming, police said.
When they looked into a window, they saw Swiney armed with a knife and dragging his mother, police said.
After Swiney ignored multiple commands to drop the knife, Officer A. Garza Jr. shot him, police said.
Swiney died at a local hospital.
His mother, who suffered stab wounds, was listed in serious condition Friday.
Police and the Harris County District Attorney's Office are reviewing the shooting.
