A police officer in Hedwig village returned fire Monday night after a man who fled following a traffic stop pulled out a pistol and opened fire.
The officer wasn’t injured Monday when a shot the man fired tore through his pants leg, Hedwig Village police Chief David Gott said.
The officer tried to pull a vehicle over Monday night for an illegal turn, but the driver sped off.
At one point he stopped, a passenger hopped out, and then the chase resumed, police said.
The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into some brushes.
That’s when the driver pulled out a pistol and opened fire, Gott said.
The officer, who was not identified, returned fire and killed the man, Gott said.
The man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The passenger was still at large Tuesday.
The officer faces an administrative review of the fatal shooting.
