Texas Police Officer Wounded, Man Killed In Exchange Of Gunfire

HOUSTON (March 18, 2013)—A man was shot to death and a Houston police officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire after a traffic stop early Monday.

Officers spotted the man shortly before midnight Sunday in north Houston, weaving through traffic and driving erratically, at one point with the driver’s side door open.

As the vehicle came to a stop on a dead-end road an officer whom police identified as W. Fikes approached and ordered the driver to get out of the car.

Instead, police say, the man opened fire, hitting Fikes once in each arm.

Fikes' partner returned fire, killing the man.

The names of the dead man and the officer who shot him were not immediately released.

Fikes was being treated Monday for his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.
