Texas Prison Escapee Recaptured After 16 Years On The Run

HUNTSVILLE (February 6, 2013)—Juan Salaz, 37, a Texas prison escapee who was on the run for almost 16 years, has been captured in Mexico, authorities said Wednesday.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials said Salaz was caught last week by authorities in Mexico and is awaiting transfer back to the U.S.

He is an American citizen for whom authorities were searching on both sides of the border.

Salaz escaped in March 1997 from the Garza East prison in Beeville.

He was serving three concurrent 35-year sentences for two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon in Houston.

He's now also facing a felony escape charge.
