HOUSTON (September 19, 2013)--A reserve Harris County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man outside a Houston-area pawn shop after the man opened fire on him.
The deputy wasn’t injured in the exchange of gunfire Wednesday night, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.
The name of the man who died wasn't immediately released.
Pawn shop employees, who feared a possible robbery, called authorities after a customer asked to see some expensive jewelry, but could not produce the required identification.
The reserve deputy arrived and asked the man for his ID.
The man got a gun from his vehicle and opened fire, authorities said.
The deputy then shot the man twice.
The sheriff's office is investigating.
Reserve deputies are volunteers who receive law enforcement training and have the same legal authority as paid officers.
