Texas School Board Bans Confederate Battle Flag

BUDA (December 18, 2012)—The Hays School Board voted Monday night to ban the display of the Confederate battle flag on district property or at district-sponsored events.

The board voted 5-2 to amend the student code of conduct to ban the flag, which formerly was displayed with the Hays High School Rebel mascot.

The ban also covers any imagery deemed to be racially hostile, offensive or intolerant.

The action came months after two students were accused of writing racial slurs and urinating on the door of a black teacher's classroom.
