EL PASO (January 6, 2013)--Eighteen employees of the El Paso State Supported Living Center were reassigned while officials investigate allegations of abuse or neglect involving its special needs residents.
Allison Lowery, with the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, said the investigation could take weeks or months, during which time employees will not have contact with the residents during that time.
Lowery says the El Paso center has had a total of 67 allegations of abuse or neglect by staff since September.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services investigates the allegations.
A U.S. Justice Department review last summer confirmed incidents of physical abuse and neglect and said the 145-bed center wasn't adequately addressing causes for injuries.
