FORT WORTH (January 16, 2013)—Edward Washington III, 18, who was convicted of murder for orchestrating the death of a man over a $40 Super Bowl bet, was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday.
A jury in Fort Worth decided on the sentence after finding Washington guilty on Monday.
Jarami Thomas, 20, was shot to death in March 2011 in the parking lot of an Arlington convenience store, authorities said.
Thomas had placed a bet with Washington on the February 2011 game, played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, via Facebook and after Thomas failed to pay up, Washington threatened him, prosecutors said.
Clevin Earl Brown, Jr., a friend of Washington’s, was convicted in April 2012 of shooting Thomas and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
