CROSBYTON (January 10, 2013)—Two-year-old Leah Marie Aguirre, who was the focus of a statewide Amber Alert, was found dead Thursday and her caretaker was arrested on a capital murder charge, authorities said.

Authorities arrested Matilda Almaraz Thursday after FBI investigators executed a search warrant at her home, Crosbyton Police chief Greg Parrot told KCBD-TV.

The body of the toddler believed to be Leah was found in Almaraz's basement.

Results of an autopsy were pending Thursday evening.

Parrot said the investigation is ongoing and Almaraz might not be the only suspect.

A statewide Amber Alert was issued Tuesday for Leah, who was last seen at around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 3 in Crosbyton, a town of about 1,900 residents west of Lubbock.

The alert said she have been abducted by a man named Miguel, who was Hispanic with brown hair and brown eyes and was believed to be driving a red Ford Focus.

The alert was canceled Thursday.
