RIO GRANDE CITY (August 14, 2014) A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was injured when the open door of a vehicle whose driver was speeding off struck him.
The trooper approached the suspicious vehicle Wednesday night in a parking lot near Rio Grande City, but the driver sped off, DPS Sgt.. Elizabeth Barney said.
The driver’s side door of the vehicle struck the trooper, whose injuries aren’t believed to be life threatening, Barney said.
The trooper fired on the fleeing vehicle and hit the left rear tire.
Authorities later found the vehicle, which was abandoned about a half mile away.
The driver remains at large.
Authorities found more than 300 pounds of bundled marijuana in the abandoned car with a street value of more than $100,000.
The trooper was treated and later released from a hospital.
