Texas Wildfire Led To One Death, Officials Say

FRITCH (May 13, 2014) A wildfire in the Texas Panhandle that destroyed 156 structures also led to one death, authorities said Tuesday.

The man was found dead in his home of a heart attack that’s attributable to the fire, Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman Troy Duchneaux said Tuesday.

Teams of emergency officials were combing a 4-square-mile area to assess the damage and search for potential victims.

Duchneaux said crews will mount a door-to-door search Tuesday of the area around Lake Meredith about 30 miles northeast of Amarillo.

The fire that started Sunday near Fritch was 75 percent contained Tuesday, officials said.

About 2,100 people were forced to evacuate.

Sheriff’s deputies were escorting evacuees back to their homes Tuesday to allow them to retrieve medications and pets.
