ABILENE (June 5, 2014) An Abilene woman who police say was shot to death by her boyfriend was found still clutching her injured infant son, authorities said Thursday.
The 2-week-old suffered a hand wound from the same round that killed his mother, Makayla Bunting, 22, police said.
Chevayae Johnson, 23, whom police identified as the infant’s father, was in critical condition Thursday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.
He has been charged with murder in the shooting Wednesday night at an apartment and other charges are possible, Sgt. Lynn Beard said.
Officers found the woman and the infant after they responded a 911 call from one of Bunting's relatives.
They initially thought her boyfriend was dead, but he regained consciousness and attacked the officers, who subdued him using a Taser.
The woman's 4-year-old daughter was not hurt.
Police said the suspect is also her father.
