Texas Woman Headed To Prison For Helping Gangs

EL PASO (January 13, 2013)—April Cardoza, 24, has been sentenced to a 1½-year prison term for relaying messages between her imprisoned father and gang members on the street.

Cardoza pleaded guilty in October to racketeering conspiracy.

She was sentenced on Friday.

Cardoza, the daughter of Manuel Cardoza, was indicted in 2011 along with 34 other Barrio Azteca gang members.

Her father, who prosecutors say was a gang captain, is serving a life sentence for racketeering, extortion and conspiracy.

Of those charged in the indictment, 10 were accused of killing two U.S. consulate officials in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, in 2010.

April Cardoza was not accused in the killings.

Of the others, 25 have pleaded guilty, one killed himself, another awaits trial and six await extradition from Mexico.

Two are at large.
