BROWNSVILLE (July 23, 2014) Yadira Garcia, 35, of Alamo, could be sentenced to as much as 30 years in federal prison after she was convicted of lying on purchase records for five assault rifles she says she used bingo winnings to pay for.

She’ll be sentenced later this year in Brownsville after jurors convicted her Tuesday of six counts of making false statements on firearms records.

Garcia bought five assault rifles in August 2013 over a period of six days from dealers in Harlingen and McAllen and paid more than $5,000, prosecutors said.

Investigators did not immediately confirm the source of the cash that Garcia said was from bingo.

Garcia told investigators that she was the buyer, lived in Pharr and relatives and friends kept the guns for her.

One of the rifles days later turned up in Reynosa, Mexico.
