HOUSTON (January 7, 2013)—Texas women’s death row inmate Kimberly McCarthy, 51, who faces execution this month for the fatal stabbing and bludgeoning of a retired university professor, lost an appeal Monday at the U.S. Supreme Court.

The high court, without comment, refused Monday to review McCarthy’s case.

McCarthy is scheduled to die on Jan. 29 for the July 1997 murder of retired college professor Dorothy Booth, 71, who was killed during a robbery at the victim's home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas.

McCarthy is one of 10 women on women's death row in Gatesville, but the only one with an execution date.

At least eight men have executions scheduled in the coming months.

McCarthy would be the fourth Texas woman put to death since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.
