Texas DPS Rolls Out New River Interceptor

AUSTIN (December 8, 2011)--The Texas Department of Public of Safety commissions a new shallow-water interceptor vessel Thursday in Austin use in patrols of the Rio Grande and international lakes.

The vessel will be named in honor of Trooper Jerry Don Davis, 26, who was killed in October 1980 during a road stop on U.S. 84 just outside Slaton, about 15 miles southeast of Lubbock.

The vessel starts its patrol operations early next year.

Davis was shot after he stopped Wayne Alexander, Jr., 21, of Lorenzo, for speeding and then discovered that Alexander had stolen a car.

Alexander is serving a life sentence for the slaying.
