Police Want To Know How Texas Kindergartner Got Loaded Gun

HOUSTON (April 20, 2011)--Houston police were trying to determine Wednesday how a kindergarten student got the loaded gun that he took to an elementary school Tuesday.

The gun accidentally discharged after falling from the 6-year-old boy’s pocket as he sat down for lunch in the school’s cafeteria Tuesday.

No one was struck directly by the single bullet fired from the gun, but fragments hit the boy and two other students, authorities said.

Some parents said the incident has made them think twice about safety at Ross Elementary School and they wonder if additional security measures, such as extra officers and metal detectors, are needed.

School district officials said extra security was in place Wednesday to allay parents' fears.

Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said it's too early in the investigation to tell if any charges will be filed.

The boy who took the gun to school faces possible disciplinary action including being sent to an alternative school for as long as 180 days.

District spokesman Norm Uhl says officials have made no decisions regarding punishment.
