ELM MOTT (September 24, 2013) -- McLennan County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating the theft of a souped-up off-road utility vehicle, or UTV, that left a local racing team nearly $20,000 in the hole.
Munn Racing, just off of I-35 near Elm Mott, reported the theft last Wednesday.
According to the racing team’s owner, Chip Munn, team members were working on motocross bikes in a garage behind their shop during the heist.
Munn says they normally move the team’s UTV outside of their garage so they can do maintenance on bikes for upcoming races.
Around 11 p.m., surveillance footage captured a man sneaking up to the UTV, getting in, and driving it out of Munn Racing’s parking lot.
Munn said team members didn’t hear the UTV’s engine starting up, because a bike was being revved inside their garage.
The UTV cost up to $13,000 according to Munn.
Munn also said that there, “was a big awning canopy for Munn Racing in the back of the UTV bed,” and the thieves made off with that too.
“The awning is about $9,700. So we’re out a little over twenty thousand dollars," Munn said.
“It was a big hit for us.”
The thief completed the heist underneath security lights and a high-tech surveillance system. Munn says he thinks someone possibly scouted his shop before the theft.
“Moving the UTV out of the shop to work on bikes is a normal routine for us. You wouldn’t know we did that unless you saw us doing it late at night,” Munn said.
Munn is offering $1,000 to anyone who has information on the whereabouts of his UTV or the thief who made stole it.
