WACO (March 13, 2014) A man and a woman were in custody and en route to Waco Thursday after they were arrested in the theft of mail from drop boxes outside of local post offices, U.S. Postal Inspector Michael Sullivan said.

Charles Hattenbach and Kathryn Hubbert were arrested at around midnight at a residence in Temple.

They’re expected to appear before a federal magistrate later in the day in Waco.

The arrest stems from a series of mail thefts in Milam, Williamson, Bell and McLennan Counties that date back to December.

The most recent break-ins were over the weekend at post offices in Milano, Buckholts, Rockdale, Cameron and Rogers.

Police said the thieves took everything from inside the mailboxes.

"This is not a real sophisticated group," Sullivan said.

"They are not into identity theft. They are looking for the quick cash, blank checks and gift cards,” he said.

Sullivan said he believes the mail thieves wanted drug money and were looking for it in small towns.
