Thieves Make Off With Texas Widow’s $30,000 Coin Collection

SANTA FE (February 1, 2013)—Police in Santa Fe in Southeast Texas were searching Friday for two thieves who posed as yard workers and then made off with a widow's collection of gold coins valued at $30,000.

The theft happened Tuesday.

Police said one of the thieves was talking to Elaine Harris, 77, when the other sneaked into the home and grabbed a large box and safe in which Harris kept the gold and silver coins collected by her late husband.

Harris says the person who was talking to her claimed to be there to cut tree limbs.

She didn't notice the safe was gone until Wednesday.

The theft came a week after someone stole $1,500 worth in quarters from a trailer.
