Thousands Of Flights Canceled Tuesday; Air Traffic Here Affected

(February 1, 2011)--Airlines had canceled more than 4,500 flights by mid morning Tuesday because of the big winter storm moving through the middle of the U.S. and delays and cancellations were reported at Central Texas airports, as well.

An ice storm closed Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Tuesday, but spokesman David Magana said the airport was open again after crews cleared ice from the runways.

At Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport Tuesday all flights to and from DFW were canceled until late Tuesday afternoon. Flights to and from Houston and Atlanta were on time Tuesday morning.

All American Eagle flights in and out of Waco Regional Airport were canceled Tuesday as was the morning Continental Express flight to Houston.

Central Texas air travelers are advised to check on the status of their flights before leaving for airports.

American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said about 800 flights were canceled at DFW and about 1,400 were canceled system-wide.

Flight-tracking service FlightAware.com says the total number of cancellations for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is already more than 7,700.

FlightAware says airports in Newark, N.J., and Chicago are the hardest hit, with more than 600 cancellations at each facility.

Chicago is a hub for United and American airlines, and Continental has a hub in Newark.

JetBlue was canceling flights in and out of New York's JFK airport for the rest of Tuesday. Some flights will resume Wednesday afternoon. It plans to shut down its Boston flying Tuesday night through Thursday morning.
