Toxic Alga Bloom Appears To Be Headed Down The Brazos

(March 10, 2011)—A toxic golden alga bloom that formed during the first week of January on Lake Granbury appears to be headed down the Brazos River toward Lake Whitney, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said Thursday.

As of Feb. 28, the total number of fish killed in the lake was estimated at more than 82,000, most of them non-game species.

On Saturday, however, Somervell County Game Warden Joni Kuykendall was notified of a fish kill on the Brazos below the lake.

An investigation is underway, but department says it suspects the bloom is now in the Brazos River, affecting the 50 stretch of the river between Lake Granbury and Lake Whitney.

“An official estimate of dead fish in the river has not yet been completed; however, biologists believe the number of fish killed in the Brazos River over the past week may very well surpass the estimated number of fish killed in Lake Granbury over the past two months,” the Parks and Wildlife Department said in a press release Thursday.
