JEWETT (October 16, 2013)—A train derailment Wednesday in Jewett closed down a stretch of U.S. Highway 79.
Six cars jumped the tracks that run alongside the highway near the Nucor Steel plant in Jewett, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said.
No injuries were reported.
Until highway was cleared late Wednesday night, motorists were diverted around the derailment.
To avoid the area, the sheriff’s office said drivers approaching Jewett on U.S. 79 from the southwest should take Highway 7 east from Marquez to Robbins and then State Highway 39 north to U.S. 79.
Drivers approaching from the northeast should take Highway 39 south to Highway 7 and then head west back to Highway 79.
