CANADIAN (July 8, 2014) Two people who died in the Texas Panhandle when an 18-wheeler broadsided their car as they were turning off a highway onto a rural road were identified Tuesday as Fernando Ortiz, 56, and his wife, Leticia Ortiz, 49, both of Spearman.
They died at the scene of the accident Monday evening in Ochiltree County north of Canadian in the northeast corner of the Panhandle.
They were northbound on U.S. Highway 83 in a Chevrolet Equinox when Fernando Ortiz attempted to turn left onto FM 281 and pulled into the path of the southbound 18-wheeler, the DPS said.
The driver of the truck, Billy Gene Schwandt, 49, of Johnson City, Tenn., was not hurt.
