Two Teenage Immigrants Killed In Hit-And-Run In Texas

AMARILLO (October 2, 2012)--Two refugee families in the Texas Panhandle are mourning the loss of their teenage daughters, both victims of a hit-and-run accident.

Irafasha Vestina, 14, and Violette Ntawurusimba, 13, who were natives of Tanzania became friends in Amarillo and were known for walking everywhere together.

They were walking to Irafasha's home after eating with her brother at around 8 p.m. Sunday when police say a pickup truck driven by 19-year-old Gillermo Flores hit them.

Flores was jailed Tuesday on $100,000 bond on two counts of causing an accident involving death.

Flores initially fled the scene of the accident, but his family took him to police.

Police did not believe alcohol was a factor.
