Two Texas Baptist Universities Challenge Birth Control Mandate

WASHINGTON (October 10, 2012)--Houston Baptist University and East Texas Baptist University are the latest to file suit to block the federal health care law's contraceptive coverage mandate.

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of the two schools, and says there are now 33 separate lawsuits challenging the birth control mandate.

At a congressional hearing in February, East Texas Baptist University President Samuel Oliver declared his school's religious objection to offering insurance for emergency contraceptives.

"Our faith and the most recent science tell us that these drugs cause abortions,” he said.

The schools said they each face fines of more than $10 million a year if they don't comply.

A federal court in Washington, meanwhile, has set a hearing next Tuesday on Tyndale House Publishers' request for an injunction blocking enforcement of the mandate.

Tyndale is a publisher of Bibles and Christian books.
