LUFKIN (October 14, 2013)—One of two toddlers found over the weekend in a pool at a home in the Lufkin area has died in a Houston hospital.
Twenty-month-old Amarie Rodriguez died Sunday, Alex Loessin, a spokeswoman for Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital said.
The other child, 2-year-old Ayden Bentley, was in good condition Monday.
The two toddlers evidently got out of the sight of their parents Saturday, but authorities aren't sure how long they were in the pool before the boy's father discovered them, Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said.
Lt. Pete Maskunas said the man and his girlfriend were house-sitting with the children at a home in Lurkin owned by his relatives.
The woman's daughter died in the incident.
The sheriff's office and Child Protective Services are investigating.
The toddlers were taken to a Lufkin hospital before being flown to Houston.
