The accident happened at around 8 a.m. between mile markers 338 and 339 southbound.

Bellmead police said an 18-wheeler that was southbound on the highway jackknifed and forced a car into the guardrail.

The driver of the car was trapped inside the car and firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free him.

The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.

The left and center lanes of the southbound highway were closed because of the accident.

Officials estimated it would take about 90 minutes to clean up a diesel spill and to repair guardrail damage.

Traffic was backed up or slowed for almost a mile, officials said.
