GALVESTON (September 23, 2012)--Navy officials commissioned the $480 million combat ship the USS Fort Worth Saturday in Galveston.
Fort Worth joins Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Corpus Christi as Texas cities with Navy vessels named after them.
The Navy has 21 similar littoral combat ships under contract. ‘
Littoral ships are more lightweight for better speed and agility, and are designed for use in shallow coastal waters.
Among those attending the commissioning were Republican U.S. Rep. Kay Granger and Admiral Mark Ferguson, vice chief of Naval operations.
The 390-foot-long USS Fort Worth leaves Monday for San Diego, where it will be based.
The ship was originally christened in Wisconsin in 2010.
